The "Inbox Upgrade" Trap
Imagine a work email with the headline: "Action Required: Upgrade to the New 2026 Security Standard." It has the right logos, looks official, and warns you'll be locked out in 24 hours if you don't click. If you click, you aren't getting an upgrade.
Why It’s Happening Now
With recent cyberattacks in the news, scammers know Dublin business owners and remote workers are on edge about security. They are exploiting that anxiety by pretending to be the "fix."
The 3-Second "Sniff Test"
- The Panic Button: Real companies rarely give a 24-hour ultimatum. If an email forces you to hurry, it’s a trap.
- The Fake Address: Look past the display name. If it claims to be "Microsoft" but ends in
@secure-login-update.net, delete it. - Go Direct: Never use the link in the email. Open a new window and type the official website yourself.
At the Buckeye Sentinel, we know the best security tool is simply taking three seconds to think before you click.
