The Fake Party Invite Scam
It is summer party and graduation season. You get an email or a text message with a link asking you to view an digital invitation to a neighborhood celebration. When you click the link, a page opens asking you to type in your email address and password to open the invite.
Why It Works
Scammers know that everyone is busy planning cookouts, graduation parties, and summer get-togethers right now. They send out thousands of these fake invitations hoping someone in our area will assume it is from a neighbor or a friend and log in without thinking.
The 3 Second Rule
- Watch the Login: A real online invitation site like Evite will never force you to type your personal email password just to look at a party details page.
- Check the Sender: Look closely at who sent the message. If the email address looks like a messy string of random numbers and letters, delete it immediately.
- Ask the Host: If you think the invite might be real but feel unsure, send a quick text to your friend to ask if they actually sent it.
At the Buckeye Sentinel, we know that keeping your private data safe is as simple as pausing before you type.
