Stop Hackers from Using Your Smart Lightbulb: A Quick Safety Guide
As of April 2026, the line between your job’s computer security and your home’s security has disappeared. Dublin's fast internet makes it a target for hackers who want to turn your smart lightbulbs or doorbells into "zombie" devices to secretly attack your work data.
Three Quick Steps to Keep Your Home Safe
- Separate Your "Toys" from Your "Tools": Use your Guest Wi-Fi network for smart home gadgets. Keep your work laptop and important devices on your main Wi-Fi. This builds a digital wall to stop hackers from jumping between them.
- Use a Real Key for Work: Passwords are not enough anymore. For all work accounts, use a physical security key or a face/fingerprint scan (called Hardware MFA). If a hacker steals your password, they still can't get in without that physical step.
- The Weekly Reboot: Once a week, turn off and turn back on your main Wi-Fi router and smart home hubs. This simple step often wipes out basic hidden viruses that hackers use to stay connected to your home network.
